The fight to save Canada's Archives

On May 28th librarians & archivists made their way to Ottawa to participate in the Archivists’ On to Ottawa Trek to protest funding cuts to Canada's libraries & archives.

On May 31st attendees of the Canadian Library Association Conference are being asked to show their support by wearing a white shirt and/or black ribbon.

But it doesn't stop there. YOUR help is needed. Why?

If you are a genealogist, regardless of where in the world you live, these funding cuts will affect your ability to search for Canadian relations.

How?

- Digitization has been cut by 50%. The past few decades LAC has brought us thousands of digital records all freely accessible from their website. With digitization cut in half we'll see a significant drop in the records being brought online. Many genealogists are anticipating the release of the 1921 census next year, with these cuts will it be made available?

- Staff cuts. When you write to a library or archive who answers your inquiry? When you visit who helps you locate the records you seek? With 450 LAC staff on notice (215 whose jobs will be eliminated) who will be able to help you?

- Preservation. 30% of the staff charged with preserving non-governmental records have been eliminated. Many records will be destroyed because there is no funding to preserve or store them. Is the elusive piece to your genealogy puzzle among them?

- Inter-library loan. Starting in 2013 it will no longer be possible to request microfilm, books or other materials from other libraries. If your local library or archive doesn't have what you need, you're out of luck!

- Library closures. With lack of stuff, funding and programming support many libraries will either have to cut services significantly or close. Among those affected are Transport Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Parks Canada, Citizenship & Immigration Canada... and many many more.

These cuts are not isolated to the services provided by Library & Archives Canada. They are not isolated to the staff losing their jobs. These cuts affect everyone who uses or benefits from our archive & library services.

How you can help
  •    Visit the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) website Save Library & Archives Canada and get involved. (Even if you live outside Canada!)
  •   Sign a Petition
  •    If you live in Canada write to your local member of parliament

Help save Library & Archives Canada!

Library & Archives Canada, the instituation charged with preserving Canada's history, is facing massive budget cuts.

This will have a huge impact not just on today's genealogists, historians and researchers, but long lasting effects on preserving our present for the future.

Many collections will be destroyed as there is no place to store the documents. LAC is also cutting many services that are vital to researchers including Inter-Library Loan.

This is a devastating blow to genealogists and it's up to us to fight this ruling and help preserve the collections and services offered by Library & Archives Canada.

Not that long ago we won the fight to retain access to Canada's post 1901 census records, by coming together in support of Library & Archives Canada we can make a difference!

    What you can do:
    Suggestions?
Do you know of other ways we can help preserve Canada's history and access to it?  Please leave a comment.

    Genealogy News

It's enumeration time again! Starting in May Canadians will be asked to participate in the 2011 census. One of the questions will be asking for your permission to share your census information after 92 years (2103). Please check YES otherwise your descendants will not have the joy of finding you in the future

Ancestry.ca is offering free access to their Canadian Records Collection from April 20 through May 1 in celebration of the Royal Wedding.

Library & Archives Canada announced that they plan to put most of their services online by 2017

Archives of Ontario has released a new year of Ontario birth (1913), marriage (1928) and death (1938) registrations on microfilm. These records can now be viewed at the Archives of Ontario, or at Family History Centres worldwide (upon request). The indexes to these registrations can be requested via interlibrary loan at any Canadian Library with a microfilm reader. There are plans to make these registrations, plus one year before and after (births 1912-1914, marriages 1927-1929, deaths 1937-1939) available on the Archives of Ontario website in the near future.

The Ontario Genealogy Society has been working tirelessly to get Bill 126 passed. This Bill would protect inactive cemeteries from relocation and needs your support. Please visit the OGS website for more information.

2011 Canadian Census short form will still be mandatory, long form being debated

A news article from CBC reports that the short form of the 2011 census will still be mandatory, it's the long form's future that is in question.

Last week it was reported that the Conservative government scrapped the long form and made it voluntary. The Liberal government is now protesting that decision (Don't Cut Long Census Form: Liberals, CBC News, 7 Jul 2010).

Will the Liberal government also protest keeping the information private? That remains to be seen but my fingers are crossed!

2011 Canadian Census will be voluntary & kept private

In a move that has genealogists gasping in horror the Canadian government has decided the 2011 census will be voluntary (instead of the usual mandatory) and will be kept private instead of being released after 100 years.

To protest this decision or make your views known to the government please write to your Member of Parliament!

2010: Year of the British Home Child

2010 has been designated as Year of the British Home Child in Canada.

From 1869 to 1939 various workhouses, sheltering homes, orphanages and child care organizations in Great Britain immigrated over 100,000 orphaned, abandoned, pauper children ages 1 to 18 to Canada today known as the British Home Children. Of the over 50 sending agencies, some of the more well known names are Maria Rye, Macpherson, Fegan, Quarriers, Barnardo, Middlemore, Catholic Emigration Society, Salvation Army, Church of England Waif & Strays.

Canada Post is issuing a stamp to commemorate the British Home Children this October.

It is estimated that 12%, over 4 million of the Canadian population, are a descendant of a Home Child. How many would there be worldwide?

There is a British Home Child mailing list and accompanying Descendants website for further information http://www.britishhomechildren.org/ This site will also list Calendar Events as they become available.

We hope you will join us in publicizing this important part of Canadian history by helping us spread the word and educating the general public.

If there are any descendants on this list I am trying to get enough people together to make squares for a Memory Quilt so please contact me if you are interested.  The Quilt square (or photos for a square) deadline is Mar 18. We are writing our Home Children stories to be published in an Anthology Book later this summer - no deadline as yet.

1% of Canadian History Is Online

Outgoing National Archivist Ian Wilson gave an interview to The Whig Standard on how his job at Library & Archives Canada has evolved from paper preservation to online digitization.
