Ancestry.ca is offering free access to their Canadian Records Collection from April 20 through May 1 in celebration of the Royal Wedding.

Library & Archives Canada announced that they plan to put most of their services online by 2017

Knowledge Ontario, a not-for-profit collaborative has created The Community Digitization Project (CDP) to help bring more local digital content online. [Ottawa Citizen: Ontario's history goes digital]

Archives of Ontario has released a new year of Ontario birth (1913), marriage (1928) and death (1938) registrations on microfilm. These records can now be viewed at the Archives of Ontario, or at Family History Centres worldwide (upon request). The indexes to these registrations can be requested via interlibrary loan at any Canadian Library with a microfilm reader. There are plans to make these registrations, plus one year before and after (births 1912-1914, marriages 1927-1929, deaths 1937-1939) available on the Archives of Ontario website in the near future.

The Ontario Genealogy Society has been working tirelessly to get Bill 126 passed. This Bill would protect inactive cemeteries from relocation and needs your support. Please visit the OGS website for more information.

Missing an Ancestor? Ask a construction worker!
Construction workers in Quebec and Ontario had their work disrupted when they came across unmarked burials. In Quebec City 12 graves were discovered while fixing a water main, and the search of a construction site is underway in the hopes of locating mass graves from the Battle of the Plains of Abraham (1759). In Fort Erie, Ontario construction workers came across two skeletons thought to be from the late 1700's/early 1800's.

2011 Canadian Census short form will still be mandatory, long form being debated

A news article from CBC reports that the short form of the 2011 census will still be mandatory, it's the long form's future that is in question.

Last week it was reported that the Conservative government scrapped the long form and made it voluntary. The Liberal government is now protesting that decision (Don't Cut Long Census Form: Liberals, CBC News, 7 Jul 2010).

Will the Liberal government also protest keeping the information private? That remains to be seen but my fingers are crossed!

In a move that has genealogists gasping in horror the Canadian government has decided the 2011 census will be voluntary (instead of the usual mandatory) and will be kept private instead of being released after 100 years.

To protest this decision or make your views known to the government please write to your Member of Parliament!

When researching ancestors in Canada, you may find records that state they lived in Upper Canada or in Lower Canada. Where are those places? The Atlas of Canada can tell you.

Natural Resources Canada has a Web site with many maps, including today's political divisions, ecology, rivers, population, agriculture, mining, climate change, relief maps and much, much more. However, genealogists will be attracted to the Map Archives and historical maps.

I spent some time looking at pre-Confederation maps, namely 1740 and 1823. Both were fascinating as they showed the border changes before and after the British kicked the French out of North America (with the exception of St. Pierre and Miquelon). British North America circa 1823 was comprised of Lower Canada, Upper Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland (including the Labrador Coast). The Northwest Territories were considered British possessions, while the Hudson’s Bay Company controlled Rupert’s Land. The United States and Britain jointly administered the Oregon Territory. I also noted the area called "Russian America." We normally do not think today of Russian territory within North America. Instead, we call it Alaska.

When you first see a map, it typically shows all of present-day Canada. However, using the mouse, you can click on points in the map to zoom in and out. You can also pan to the east, west, north, or south. I was able to zoom in until small areas of just a few miles across were displayed on the screen. The 1823 map also shows the locations of all Hudson's Bay Company Posts and King's Post Company locations, as well as other traders' locations and all significant European settlements. Best of all, it is easy to print any of the maps on your local printer.

I experimented with the site's search capabilities. I entered the name of "Miramichi," a town in which a few of my ancestors lived. The site reported that it was located at a latitude of 47 degrees 0 minutes 0 seconds north, longitude 65 degrees 28 minutes 0 seconds west.

I then clicked on a link, and a map appeared on the screen with an arrow pointing directly to the town. I then right-clicked on the map, selected "Save Picture As…" and saved the map image onto my hard drive. I later inserted that image into my ancestors' records in my favorite genealogy program's multimedia section. The mouseclicks required were simple; it is easier to do it than to describe it here. When I now create Web sites or books of my genealogy data, a map appears in my records, showing the location where these individuals lived.

I have recently started a new website for the Bible Christian Project - an ongoing project to collect as much information as possible about the Bible Christians in North America. There will be a link on the main page of The Bible Christians had a presence in 17 of Ontario's counties, in all three of PEI's counties, in southern Manitoba, and in three US states (Ohio, Upper Michigan and Wisconsin) These were all under the umbrella of the Canadian Conference. Old Durham County was a "hotbed" of Bible Christian movement as was Huron County in the west.

Searching for my Ontario Ancestors by Rob McLean

My paternal grandfather, Bill McLean, was born 17 July, 1901 to Donald (“Black Dan”) M(a)cLean & Catharine M(a)cLean. Grandpa was the youngest of seven children (Henrietta, Agnes, Hugh Daniel, Margaret, Reuben, Catherine & William Angus) in Keewatin, Jaffray Township, Kenora District, Ontario.

At the time of his retirement in 1968¹, Bill like every other new retiree in Canada, applied for his Canada Pension Plan benefits. He was advised that according to the Government of Canada, he didn't exist.

After much consternation & discussion, his sister Kate recalled an old story of how their parents had fought over what their son would be named. His father swore up and down that his youngest son would be named Angus, a good highland name. His mother wanted grandpa named William.

Donald finally agreed that the child would be named William, and so it was. All of his life, he was called, Will or Bill. Every document he signed bore the name William McLean.

Finally, after months of arguing with the federal government, my Uncle Bill (a federal civil servant) did some searching of his own. He went on a hunch that “Black Dan” had not registered his youngest son as William, but rather as Angus as he had originally wanted. Sure enough, the provincial records showed an Angus McLean being born to Daniel & Catherine McLean of Keewatin on 17 July, 1901.

With this proof, and the recollections of the relatives, grandpa finally got his pension. And to ensure that he was named what both of his parents wanted, he had his named officially changed to William Angus McLean.

borrowed through the Inter-library Loan Department of your public library,

borrowed from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through their Family History Centres,

Purchased directly from the Ontario Genealogical Society.

To find the birth registration for my grandfather, which allowed me to have a Primary Source for his birth I went to the Ontario Vital Statistics: Registrations of Births, Marriages and Deaths web site.

Once there, I clicked on “Finding a Birth Registration -A Pathfinder”, and then scrolled down to the date range that covered his birth year. Since he was born in 1901, I clicked on “...Between July 1869 & Dec. 1912”.

This took me to the page that gave me the microfilm number for the index that lists his birth. In his case I find that I can:

either go to my local public library and request that they order in film # MS 931, Reel 13 through the Inter Library Loan Program, or

Order and view film # 2073810 at my local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family History Centre.
In my case, my local library was closer.

When the film came in, I loaded it into the reader and scrolled through until I found his record. This gave me his birth registration number, which I then used to the order the microfilm that held a copy of his birth registration.

I hope this helps? I am no expert at this, but I thought that sharing my personal experience may help others.

2010: Year of the British Home Child

2010 has been designated as Year of the British Home Child in Canada.

From 1869 to 1939 various workhouses, sheltering homes, orphanages and child care organizations in Great Britain immigrated over 100,000 orphaned, abandoned, pauper children ages 1 to 18 to Canada today known as the British Home Children. Of the over 50 sending agencies, some of the more well known names are Maria Rye, Macpherson, Fegan, Quarriers, Barnardo, Middlemore, Catholic Emigration Society, Salvation Army, Church of England Waif & Strays.

Canada Post is issuing a stamp to commemorate the British Home Children this October.

It is estimated that 12%, over 4 million of the Canadian population, are a descendant of a Home Child. How many would there be worldwide?

There is a British Home Child mailing list and accompanying Descendants website for further information http://www.britishhomechildren.org/ This site will also list Calendar Events as they become available.

We hope you will join us in publicizing this important part of Canadian history by helping us spread the word and educating the general public.

If there are any descendants on this list I am trying to get enough people together to make squares for a Memory Quilt so please contact me if you are interested. The Quilt square (or photos for a square) deadline is Mar 18. We are writing our Home Children stories to be published in an Anthology Book later this summer - no deadline as yet.

Irish Emigration of 1839

Colonel George Wyndham was the son of the third Earl of Egremont who was instrumental in the large Petworth Emigration of 1832-1837 to Canada from southeast England. Wyndham also sponsored emigrations from his estates in Ireland, but only the first was conducted under similar care and conditions as those of his father. Now, historian Wendy Cameron has uncovered a list of that first group sent from Ireland in 1839 on the ship Waterloo. The list includes names, ages, family members, and their locations in January 1840. The names of most towns and townships are in the old Newcastle District of Upper Canada, but some went on to the United States.

Search records of 200,000 Canadians who fought for American Forces free this Remembrance Day
Records span 144 years and include those from the American Civil War and the two World Wars

TORONTO, Nov. 10 /CNW/ - Over the course of two centuries, hundreds of thousands of Canadians have taken up arms with their U.S. neighbours by enlisting in the U.S. Forces, in battles including the Civil War and the two World Wars. Now, Ancestry.ca, Canada's leading family history website(1), honours those brave soldiers by providing free database access to 144 years of U.S. military records, from the 11th to the 13th of November.

The U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914; U.S. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 and U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942, collectively represent the registration and enlistment records for more than 193,000 Canadian-born men who fought bravely alongside their American comrades.
Whether it was to help friends and family against a common enemy, to seek adventure, to answer a moral calling or, in some cases, simply the pursuit of financial riches, there are many reasons why so many Canadians fought with the U.S. military over the years. Some reasons were noble, some misguided, and some purely selfish.

For Family:
Many of the soldiers listed in these records were Canadian-born but children of one or more American parents. Others were born in Canada but lived in the United States at the time of enlistment. Either way, many may have felt duty-bound to serve in the armies of their parents' homes, or to defend their new homes.

For Money:
For many, money was clearly a motivating factor in their enlistment. For example, during the Civil War, wealthy Americans who did not wish to serve in the Forces could hire substitutes to enlist on their behalf. In spite of the inherent danger, fighting in the war during this time could yield far greater riches than heavy labour and was, perhaps sadly, a preferred way of life for some.

For Good:
Some of the soldiers joined in search of adventure, but many joined for moral reasons, be it to fight Nazi Germany or defend the Union and support the fight for the abolition of slavery. In fact, many of the United States Colored Regiments during the Civil War found their squadrons bolstered by black Canadians who enlisted for this very reason.

"These records also remind us that no matter which side of the border Canadians fought on, they all made a sacrifice fighting for freedom and democracy and so should be remembered for their courage."
In addition to the Canadians listed in these collections, millions of Canadians with U.S. heritage will be able to find American ancestors within these records. The three collections combined capture the records of almost 32.5 million enlistees.

By the numbers:

U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942
- This database is an indexed collection of the draft cards from the Fourth Registration, the only registration currently available to the public. It contains 7.1 million records, 93,844 of which are for Canadian-born soldiers.

US World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
- Between 1917 and 1918, around 24 million men aged 18 to 45 in the United States were required by law to register for war service. Of these, 78,551 stated that they had been born in Canada.

U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914
- Canadian-born men account for 6,985 (nearly 5 per cent) of the total of 148,844 records of registrants in the American Civil War who enlisted between 1861 and 1865 - a significant percentage considering that there was no official involvement by the government in the war.

Media Alert - World-First Launch - Historical Canadian Censuses, 1851-1916

TORONTO, June 4 /CNW/ - On Wednesday June 10, 2009, please join Ancestry.ca, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and His Worship David Miller, Mayor of the City of Toronto, to celebrate world-first online launch of the complete Historical Canadian Censuses, 1851-1916.

The collection, which has been fully indexed and includes original document images, contains more than 32 million names and provides an historical snapshot of the growth of our great nation, from pre-Confederation to the middle of the Great War.

Ancestry.ca will also reveal the surprising results of a national survey on Canadian identity.
